You'll have to answer a few multiple choice questions first, but these will be totally anonymous, private and dissociated from your avatar. In recent years, the turnover of the videogame industry has exceeded that of cinema, and there are a growing number of adult and female players. There are more frequent overlaps with other media: there are videogames for advertisements (advergames), for educational purposes and for electoral propaganda. During the second half of the nineties, major entertainment corporations extended their activities in this sector and extinguished or absorbed small producers. Now videogames are an integral part of the global cultural industry, and they are in a strategic position in the ongoing processes of media convergence. These developments inhibit the political and artistic emancipation of this medium: every code line is written for the profit of a big corporation. But if we want to express an alternative to dominant forms of gameplay we must rethink game genres, styles and languages. The ideology of a game resides in its rules, in its invisible mechanics, and not only in its narrative parts. That's why a global renewal of this medium will be anything but easy. This will involve media activists, net-artists, habitual players and critics and detractors of videogames. We chose to start with online gaming in order to sidestep mainstream distribution channels and to overcome our lack of means. Using simple but sharp games we hope to give a starting point for a new generation of critical game developers and, above all, to experiment with practices that can be easily emulated and virally diffused.

The ticket was the standard cost of an IMAX film despite not being a film or anything new besides a few minutes of trailer. IMAX makes everything better and that was certainly the case here. Analysts are quick to judge the viability of TV on the big screen as this is the first time its been done. The fact that many viewers watch the show on a computer or tablet is certainly a relevant point. “It’s not TV, it’s HBO” took on a whole new meaning, but I wouldn’t call this a game changer just yet. The only other show with the fanbase to make something like this work is Downton Abbey. Without the battle centric “The Watchers on the Wall,” it wouldn’t have worked. The narrative jumping around as it does normally would’ve made it feel much more like a TV show than a movie. Having just The Wall made it feel just like a movie. Whether or not that’s a good idea remains to be seen, but without a battle centric episode, it seems like a bit of a reach. I wouldn’t flock to the theater to see TV in more or less any other instance, but as an ASOIAF fanatic, I felt obliged to indulge. It could’ve used more Stannis, but all in all it’s worth seeing if you’re a big fan of the show.

And while they often appear in horror movies, cats don’t always necessarily enjoy watching them. And what’s with that surly black cat running amok around town? It does, however, have a way of getting under your skin. Considered tawdry during its day, “Cat People” is the story of Irena, a beautiful and unassuming Serbian immigrant working in New York’s fashion industry. The conflict of the film revolves around a unique dilemma faced by the deeply repressed Irena: There’s a new and very persistent suitor in her life whom she cares for and would like to, ahem, get to know a bit better. However, if the folklore of her native village proves correct, Irena will transform into a murderous werecat when aroused. Petting is OK with this shapeshifting cat person but heavy petting. That’s off limits, even after Irena marries her beau. If anything, “Cat People” — remade in 1982 with the kink factor cranked significantly up — provides one valuable lesson: Be careful about who you pick up at the zoo. After all, King is the master of painting the ordinary — dogs, clowns, classic cars, laundry presses, lonely fans of popular fiction — in a most malevolent light. While the titular tomcat plays a minor role in the first two uncanny tales, in the final segment it gains a name (“General”) and plays the role of hero. After all, who — or what — is better equipped to fiercely protect a young girl (Drew Barrymore) from a dagger-wielding mini-troll that lives in her bedroom walls.
